new covenant in and through Christ

The Church of God

The christian community has become the church of God in virtue of the New Covenant—that is, in virtue of its having received the Spirit of God through the preaching of the Gospel. But for Paul there exists no church of God which is not at the same time the church of Christ Jesus…

and no Spirit of God which is not at the same time…

…the Spirit of Christ,

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him. (Romans 8:9)

for I know that through your prayers and the help of the Spirit of Jesus Christ this will turn out for my deliverance, (Philippians 1:19)

…the Spirit of his Son,

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6

…the Spirit of the Risen Christ,

and was declared to be the Son of God in power according to the Spirit of holiness by his resurrection from the dead, Jesus Christ our Lord, (Romans 1:4)

You, however, are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if in fact the Spirit of God dwells in you. Anyone who does not have the Spirit of Christ does not belong to him.10But if Christ is in you, although the body is dead because of sin, the Spirit is life because of righteousness.11If the Spirit of him who raised Jesus from the dead dwells in you, he who raised Christ Jesus from the dead will also give life to your mortal bodies through his Spirit who dwells in you. (Romans 8:9-11)

…the Spirit inhabiting the Temple of which Christ is the sole foundation,

For we are God’s fellow workers. You are God’s field, God’s building. (1 Corinthians 3:9)

For no one can lay a foundation other than that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ. (1 Corinthians 3:11)

Do you not know that you are God’s temple and that God’s Spirit dwells in you? (1 Corinthians 3:16)

The Spirit that is imparted to Christians at the moment of their Baptism…

…into the body,

For in one Spirit we were all baptized into one body— Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit. (1 Corinthians 12:13)

And it is God who establishes us with you in Christ, and has anointed us, (2 Corinthians 1:21)

…into Christ,

For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ. (Galatians 3:27)

…into his death,

Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? (Romans 6:3)

The Spirit that is imparted to Christians at the moment of their Baptism and which is continuously assimilating them to their glorified Lord (cf.),

And we all, with unveiled face, beholding the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from one degree of glory to another. For this comes from the Lord who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:18)

…as sons in the Son (cf).

For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers. (Romans 8:29

For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. (Romans 8:14)

And because you are sons, God has sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, crying, “Abba! Father!” (Galatians 4:6)

Further, there is no eschatological newness except in Christ…

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old has passed away; behold, the new has come. (2 Corinthians 5:17)

…and no New Covenant except that which is in my blood,

In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” (1 Corinthians 11:25)

…and realised in the hearts of the faithful by Christ himself (cf.: letter of Christ—genitive of author).

And you show that you are a letter from Christ delivered by us, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. (2 Corinthians 3:3)

Finally,

“There is no Gospel which is not the Gospel of Christ, the Gospel of his Son, concerning his Son Christians participate in the New Covenant when they hear the message of Christ Crucified, accept it in faith and thus receive the Spirit.”

Are you so foolish? Having begun by the Spirit, are you now being perfected by the flesh? (Galatians 3:3)

concerning his Son, who was descended from David according to the flesh (Romans 1:3)

For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I mention you (Romans 1:9)
