Learn of Christ

YOU BE HOLY AS I AM HOLY: How?

The primary purpose of studying your bible is to feed on and to learn of Jesus Christ.

As students of God’s Word we confess our dependence upon God the Holy Spirit to reveal to us Christ as he is revealed within His written and inspired word. The Spirit of God is essential to the Christian’s walk. The written word of God is extremely important to the Christian’s walk. Yet, with that said, If you have not the Spirit of God in you, you are not a child of God. For the believer maturing in Christ (aka, progressive sanctification) is the process of learning of Jesus Christ through the power of the Holy Spirit of God and it is always according to revealed Truth.

We encourage teachers of God’s Word to use the following study theme(s) to develop sermons, studies and devotionals for individuals or groups.

In this study outline we will consider the following:

  • Finding Christ
  • Know Christ
  • Grow in Christ
  • Live Christ
  • Study Christ
  • Follow Christ

1 Corinthians 2:13

And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual.

FIND CHRIST

The prime objective of a student of Jesus Christ is to learn of Him – He is the teacher, you are the student. This is practical sanctification. It is NOT Law based. It is UNION based.

John 15:1-11

I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser. 2 Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit. 3 Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. 4 Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. 5 I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing. 6 If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned. 7 If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you. 8 By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples. 9 As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. 10 If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. 11 These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full

John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

Luke 24:27

And beginning with Moses and all the Prophets, he interpreted to them in all the Scriptures the things concerning himself.

Luke 24:44

Then he said to them, “These are my words that I spoke to you while I was still with you, that everything written about me in the Law of Moses and the Prophets and the Psalms must be fulfilled.”

Acts 28:23

When they had appointed a day for him, they came to him at his lodging in greater numbers. From morning till evening he expounded to them, testifying to the kingdom of God and trying to convince them about Jesus both from the Law of Moses and from the Prophets.

John 6:63

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

John 1:1

In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.

John 1:14

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

John 3:11-13

Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony. 12  If I have told you earthly things and you do not believe, how can you believe if I tell you heavenly things? 13  No one has ascended into heaven except he who descended from heaven, the Son of Man.

John 3:34

For he whom God has sent utters the words of God, for he gives the Spirit without measure.

KNOW CHRIST

Knowledge of God comes through the Word of God and our understanding of God’s Word is dependent on the Spirit of God

Matthew 16:15-17

He said to them, But who do you say that I am? 16 Simon Peter replied, You are the Christ, the Son of the living God. 17 And Jesus answered him, Blessed are you, Simon Bar- Jonah! For flesh and blood has not revealed this to you, but my Father who is in heaven

1 Peter 1:23

since you have been born again, not of perishable seed but of imperishable, through the living and abiding word of God;

John 6:63

It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is of no avail. The words that I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

James 1:18-21

Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 19  Know this, my beloved brothers: let every person be quick to hear, slow to speak, slow to anger; 20  for the anger of man does not produce the righteousness that God requires. 21  Therefore put away all filthiness and rampant wickedness and receive with meekness the implanted word, which is able to save your souls.

John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

1 Corinthians 2:9-16

What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him— 10 these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit. For the Spirit searches everything, even the depths of God. 11 For who knows a person’s thoughts except the spirit of that person, which is in him? So also no one comprehends the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God. 12 Now we have received not the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, that we might understand the things freely given us by God. 13 And we impart this in words not taught by human wisdom but taught by the Spirit, interpreting spiritual truths to those who are spiritual. 14 The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned. 15 The spiritual person judges all things, but is himself to be judged by no one. 16 For who has understood the mind of the Lord so as to instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ

GROW IN CHRIST

Conformity to Jesus Christ, which is true spiritual maturity, comes through the application of His word and to walk in His love.

2 John 1:4-9

4 I rejoiced greatly to find some of your children walking in the truth, just as we were commanded by the Father. 5  And now I ask you, dear lady—not as though I were writing you a new commandment, but the one we have had from the beginning—that we love one another. 6  And this is love, that we walk according to his commandments; this is the commandment, just as you have heard from the beginning, so that you should walk in it. 7  For many deceivers have gone out into the world, those who do not confess the coming of Jesus Christ in the flesh. Such a one is the deceiver and the antichrist. 8  Watch yourselves, so that you may not lose what we have worked for, but may win a full reward. 9 Everyone who goes on ahead and does not abide in the teaching of Christ, does not have God. Whoever abides in the teaching has both the Father and the Son.

2 Timothy 3:16

All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

Job 23:12

I have not departed from the commandment of his lips; I have treasured the words of his mouth more than my portion of food.

Jeremiah 15:16

Your words were found, and I ate them, and your words became to me a joy and the delight of my heart, for I am called by your name, O LORD, God of hosts.

John 6:35

Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst.

Matthew 5:6

Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

2 Thessalonians 2:13

But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers beloved by the Lord, because God chose you as the firstfruits to be saved, through sanctification by the Spirit and belief in the truth.

Ephesians 5:26

that he might sanctify her, having cleansed her by the washing of water with the word,

LIVE CHRIST

To know the power of the resurrected life in Christ we must know and trust in his Word.

Isaiah 11:8

The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra, and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.

Psalm 119:89

Forever, O LORD, your word is firmly fixed in the heavens.

John 15:7

If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.

Ephesians 6:17

and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God,

Hebrews 4:12

For the word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of soul and of spirit, of joints and of marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart.

Romans 10:17

So faith comes from hearing, and hearing through the word of Christ.

STUDY CHRIST

Study and Search through God’s Word, again, in dependence upon the Holy Spirit to teach.

John 5:39

You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; and it is they that bear witness about me,

2 Timothy 2:15

Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

John 15:13

Greater love has no one than this, that someone lays down his life for his friends.

John 16:26

In that day you will ask in my name, and I do not say to you that I will ask the Father on your behalf;

Jude 20

But you, beloved, build yourselves up in your most holy faith; pray in the Holy Spirit;

James 1:5

If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

1 Corinthians 2:9-13

9  But, as it is written,

“What no eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart of man imagined, what God has prepared for those who love him”—

10  these things God has revealed to us through the Spirit.

FOLLOW CHRIST

To follow Jesus Christ is to walk as He walked, to live as He lived, to love as He loved.

Luke 14:27

Whoever does not bear his own cross and come after me cannot be my disciple.
